The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the body responsible for security testing on doors, windows and locks. A BSI kitemark on a lock shows that it has been tested and has exceeded the minimum quality requirements. The British Standard number to look for on locks is BS3621. In terms of technical specification, TS007 is the number on replacement cylinders and protective door furniture which shows it meets the security standard protecting against all known methods of forced entry. There is a new standard for smart locking devices which the BSI have adopted, this is TS621:2018.
There is no such thing as a generally accepted ‘insurance approved’ lock. Most insurance companies, however, require BS3621 standard.

A sash lock is morticed into the door. It has a deadbolt which locks the door and also has a built-in latch so that the door will remain closed without having to lock it.
A dead-lock is also morticed into the door. It has a deadbolt without a latch and is often seen on older doors.
A rim lock is mounted on the surface of the door and not morticed in as the other locks are. It is often used for doors which are too thin for a mortice lock.
